SOKOL PZL W-3A.
The “SOKOL PZL W-3A” is a multi-purpose helicopter manufactured by the well-established Polish company PZL Swidnik. The SOKOL W-3A is the first helicopter ever to be developed and manufactured entirely in Poland. With the exception of the main and tail rotor blades, the aircraft is constructed conventionally from metal. The three-wheel landing gear is not retractable.
The aircraft is powered by two gas turbine engines. The blades of the four-bladed main rotor are made of fiberglass composite material, and the rotor is also equipped with a de-icing system. The permissible external temperature range for the SOKOL W-3A is between -40 and +43°C.
The cabin can accommodate up to twelve people and allows for boarding and disembarking from both sides via two sliding doors. The luggage compartment is located behind the cabin and is accessible during flight.
With an additional under-fuselage tank, the SOKOL W-3A can also be used for firefighting.
To date, a total of over 150 SOKOL W-3A helicopters have been manufactured across eight production series. The maiden flight took place in 1979. The SOKOL W-3A is an advanced version of the base model, the SOKOL W-3.
The helicopter is used for both civil and military purposes in various countries, such as Spain, Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, and formerly in Germany (by the Saxony Police).
